Montgomery County police have arrested 45-year-old Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez of Gaithersburg on charges of negligent manslaughter by vehicle following a fatal collision on July 20 near the intersection of North Frederick Avenue near Travis Avenue.

Around 10:12 p.m. on the night of the crash, officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to a crash involving a black 2022 Ram 1500 pick-up truck, driven by Jaramillo Lopez, and a black 2016 Nissan Altima.

Investigators determined that Jaramillo Lopez was traveling northbound on North Frederick Avenue at an excessive speed when he rear-ended the Nissan, which had just turned right from a parking lot.

The impact caused both vehicles to veer off the road and strike a tree.

The driver of the Nissan, 39-year-old Isaac Akomanyi, of Germantown, was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

A passenger in the Nissan and Jaramillo Lopez were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit found that Jaramillo Lopez reached a top speed of 98.2 mph in a 40-mph zone and struck the Nissan at approximately 79.5 mph.

His blood alcohol content was recorded at .159 percent one hour after the collision, nearly twice the legal limit.

Jaramillo Lopez is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.

Akomanyi had come to Maryland from Ghana, leaving behind his wife and young son, in search of the American dream.

He was remembered as a beloved family man and the sole provider for his family, and a GoFundMe campaign was established to support his wife and child.
